Who is João Maria Botelho?

João Maria Botelho is a jurist, entrepreneur and sustainability expert working at the intersection of ESG regulation, economic governance and capital allocation.

He is the founder of Generation Resonance, an international youth platform launched at COP28, dedicated to structured policy debate, sustainability literacy and democratic participation, in partnership with the United Nations Association Portugal. The initiative operates as a bridge between young leadership and public institutions, with a focus on translating the 2030 Agenda into policy-relevant outcomes.

João is also co-founder of Fora do Lugar, a leadership platform focused on ambition, purpose and impact, with a strategic emphasis on the articulation and international projection of the lusophone space (CPLP) in the global economy.

Recognised by Forbes as 30 Under 30 in Sustainability and Social Innovation, he was also awarded the ESG Next Generation Award (2026). He is the author of the first integrated ESG handbook in Portugal, published by Almedina, reflecting his work at the intersection of legal frameworks and economic transformation.

He advised on the sustainability and energy transition agenda of the presidential campaign of António José Seguro, now President of the Portuguese Republic.

Named by Randstad as one of Portugal’s emerging ESG voices, João currently serves as Ambassador of the European Climate Pact, engaging in high-level discussions on climate policy, competitiveness and regulatory strategy with European decision-makers.

He is a TEDx speaker and Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum, and a regular speaker in international forums on sustainable finance, climate law and economic transition. Alongside his professional work, he develops academic and editorial research on corporate responsibility and governance, with a focus on the relationship between regulation, capital allocation and real-world outcomes.
